Another nine or ten hours in the car and we are here. This used to be four stores in a nondescript strip mall. Now it's the Volunteer Center: sleeps 40, showers in a truck out the back door. (Ask about us about the snake!)
Our men are in a big bunk room with the men from another church who are sharing the facilities with us this week. Our women have divided into a series of individual rooms sleeping two or four. There's a big, fairly well equipped kitchen, where we've filled a refrigerator and a large shelf with supplies for the week. It's clean and neat, and air-conditioned, and the beds are pretty comfortable. (And don't worry, it was only a rubber snake, but it was still pretty scary. It was very thoughtful of the volunteers from the other church to plant it there before they gave us a quick tour of the facilities. No wonder they were so eager to show us around!)
We have faced and met a series of challenges, including shopping for groceries for 18 for the week and figuring out how to use the can opener to get the tuna salad going for our lunch sandwiches. We're getting used to having dinner after 9 PM. We're learning to understand when Robert Bates, our local supervisor, is being serious and when he's just joking around.
However, the real work is yet to come. More later.
